Becoming a designer is something that was a passion even as a child for Michael Bierut. Everyone’s perspective on design can be different but how it allows many to come together and unite is one of the many ideas as to how he identities his passion for design.
An advice that Bierut gives is to really slow down and think through the problem which may seem difficult for many younger designers who are hungry for opportunities.
Logos are there for the audience to identify a company and all its work rather than to explain. Rand says, “Should a logo be self-explanatory? It is only by association with a product, a service, a business, or a corporation that a logo takes on any real meaning.” . At the end of the day the logo is there for identification the rest falls on the company itself.
Jerry Uelsmann’s art word is spectacular as it combines many images into one. The way that he combines them is in such a way that makes you wish that was the case in real life. My favorite has to be Untitled, 1976. Although they are all in black and white, there really doesn’t need to be any color to add such emotion and emphasis on nature’s true beauty. In this he adds beauty of real life and music. In many others its nature and fantasy. This just goes to show that color can make an impact but a picture in itself is marvelous.
It can always be intimidating to want to have a blog and be successful since now there are many people who are doing it. At first it was a great way to share your ideas with a very simple blog but now, it has become a competition for many. The 6 steps to having a successful design blog is to
- spend a lot of time reading other design blogs
- find a niche
- market your blog as a valuable resource
- connect with others though social media
- its all about content
- create a professional theme
From this, I think it really related a lot to how Seth created his own blog. He has found ways to connect with various groups of people. His blog is simple yet professional. Everything is organized in a way where you couldn’t possibly get lost. Also, the starts allow others to rate his blogs which can be very beneficial later on when reviewing what needs to be improved.
As technology advances, so does what we see in books. A lot of the times we say don’t judge a book by its cover, but we’re human and that is at times what tends to happen. It seemed interesting how Kidd brought to light all the things that people would do. But comparing a book to a haiku, now that is something new yet seems right. There are many pages and words in a book but a designer comes and takes those concepts and manifests them into one design that sets the tone for the reader. A lot can go into designing a book. Whether it be purposefully having a book ruined or having them be paintings that come to life on a shelf, designing a book is more than some may see.
